Follow up:
I did finally get mine working via USB. The problem is that the RS232 version of the camera does not like TTL levels. You really do need to feed it proper RS232. So I put together the following absurd sequence of translations: USB TTL adapter, connected to a TTL RS232 adapter, connected to the camera, which promptly translates into its own logic levels. I ran the speed all the way up to over 400 kilo baud.
After changing the baud rate you need multiple syncs to attract the camera's attention. If you use the jpeg compression and high speeds you get a pretty decent image download speed.
