  • uDrive disk insertion detection issue

    Hi,

    I am using your uDRIVE-uSD-G1 to log text files to disk. Following a normal power on - autobaud - log sequence all works perfectly. My problem arises if no disk is initially present (or is removed and then re-inserted).
    Typical test:
    1. Hardware powered up with no disk present
    2. My firmware detects the log module version etc, absence of disk detected (@i)
    3. My firmware poll" the uDRIVE module using "@i" every 4 seconds
    4. Disk inserted - the green led on the uDRIVE module comes on
    5. The next "@i" responds with NAK, NAK (the first NAK overlaps the outgoing "i")
    6. I've also tried sending 0x55 (autobaud). This gives ACK while the disk is out, then NAK after the disk is inserted.

    The attached scope trace shows the "@i" command (lower trace/blue), with the overlapping NAK/NAK (upper trace / orange).

    Is this something you've come across before? I think it has always been like this as I had to put some very messy "reset module" code in a previous project to cleanly recover from disk removal and re-insertion. In this project I can't really use resets as there are two disks in the system and the reset takes a long time.

    b) Disk: Kingston 2Gb, FAT format
    c) currently using 38400 baud. Will migrate to 256000 baud soon.

    (I use the same disks and same firmware to write to the disk on a uOLED-3202X-P1, and the "@i" command works when the disk is inserted on that platform.)

    You are at some point sending an invalid command to the uDrive that is causing it to forget where it's at.

    eg if you send an @ and then send @i you will get a NAK to the (second) @ and a NAK to the i.

    Similarly getting a NAK to a U is an indication of the same thing.

    Check the code you are really sending to poll the drive, it is incorrect in some way

      I have checked my code really carefully, at the scope trace level, and still believe there is a problem with the uDRIVE firmware. I have done another series of tests with 8 second gaps between sending alternate "U" and "@i" command, all verified against a scope trace. If the first command issued to the uDRIVE after the disk is inserted (even many seconds afterwards) there is no reply from the module. Thereafter NAKs are generated (to either the U or @). In my tests this is 100% repeatable. I even increased the ACK timeout to 20 seconds with no reply. My firmware now measured the delays from command to response for every transaction, and has been verified against the scope traces for those delays within range of the scope screen. As a work-around I will now enforce the sending of a "U" (and awaiting its ACK) before any "@i". Ironically the ACK delay for the U command is 13ms after disk insertion and DF1110>SDauto1ms_

        The ONLY response returned to an Autobaud command is ACK, there is no possibility of a NAK being sent, so if you are receiving something else Autobaud is not the command being received by the uDrive, it is merely the second or subsequent 'operand' of an earlier command.

        You are not really meant to insert or remove uSD cards whilst any device they are connected to are powered up, although you can usually get away with it. One of the reasons for this is that some uSD cards have internal capacitors in the region of a couple of microfarad or more. This can mean the spike caused by inserting a uSD card could cause the uDrive to reset. Is it possible that is what is happenning? (If the green red flashes several times after the uSD card is inserted then the uDrive is probably resetting)

        Obviously if the uDrive has been reset the next command must be Autobaud, any command could cause the uDrive to lock into an invalid baud rate and thus behave eratically.

        How good is your power supply? uSD cards can draw quite a bit when power is initially applied (regardless of their internal capacitance).

        Hopefully this will help you pinpoint the problem

          Thanks for the reply. I always get an ACK response to autobaud U unless the @i command has failed to reply (with either ACK or NAK) first. The issue is that I get no response to "@i" after a disk is inserted. This is the cause of the subsequent NAKs. If I issue an autobaud U after disk insertion, but before the @i all is ok. If the uDRIVE module is resetting internally, I would expect the NAKs to come in at 9600 baud rather than 38400? It would be possible for me to issue the U at a different baud rate after disk removal to test for reset-on-insertion and I may try this at some point.

          I've only noticed the green LED come on (once, solid) when a disk is inserted. The power supply on my pcb is identical to the supply used for the OLED display (which connects to the same board). I expected the OLED+disk to have more demanding power requirements than the uDRIVE. The OLED display module works fine, 100% of the time, using the same disks and firmware (with the exception of the power up baud negotiation rate code). My pcb has 24V external supply switched to +5V for the uDRIVE using a 1A Traco DC-DC converter, 1uF output decoupling. There is a series high side FET (

            OK, yep that sounds fair. Insert a uSD and init it to get the green light on and then try removing it and reinserting to see if the uDrive resets.

            I am also curious as to why the @i response takes so long in the no-disk case.
            The only failsafe way to determine if a uSD card is in the drive or not is try and initialize it. This involves sending a sequence of commands and a recommended number of retries if there is no response. This all takes time.

            At the moment my U + @i work around seems to work fine so hopefully I can avoid the need for a full power reset after disk removal.
            We have sold tens of thousands of uDrives and have not had such an issue reported. There is something wrong, most likely with the way you are sending your commands. This is not a workaround, it will eventually cause you grief.

            Try recreating the problem with FAT Controller and post the logs.

            Maybe I am assuming something differently to what you are doing, maybe vice versa, try reading what I've already said again, dunno
