I do not have any existing USB-serial converter at the moment.

I am using the Arduino mega, I am not sure whether I can disconnect it?

If you can get to the M8RXD and M8TXD lines you should be fine, as R11 and R12 will 'effectively' disconnect the arduino if you connect something there.

I am getting incorrect response shown below, can you make anything out of it based on your experience?

        Opening COM3 Speed=14400 baud
        Sync [AA 0D 00 00 00 00] Response to Sync not correct
        Response to Sync not correct

Hmm, doesn't look like the camera, don't know never tried to do that but it should work.

Have a look at device manager and see what the default baud rate is for the Ardiono's USB converter, and maybe change it there. Some drivers don't obey the windows change baid rate command, so maybe the speed is just wrong.

Another idea, hold Arduino reset button it whilst you try communcating.

Yet another, there may be stuff in the comms buffer that needs to be flushed out, keep pressing sync whilst holding the reset button.

I have a pololu avr programmer that has serial to TTL serial adapter..

I tried to connect using this adapter but the response I got from the camera is

What are the chances that the camera is faulty?

Have you remembered to connect TX to RX and vice versa?

What you are seeing is what one might expect if the connections were BTF.
