  • FTDI Usb to Serial?

Has anyone used the FTDI Usb to Serial breakout yet? Does it really damage the driver?
    Thanks!

    You mean Damage the display?

The problem is that you need DTR and a lot of these breakouts don't have DTR.

If you have DTR, then you need to turn it into reset as decribed, variously, here http://4d.websitetoolbox.com/post/switch-from-FTDI-(uUSB)-to-Silabs-(CP2105)-6337321?highlight=reset

The link seems to be dead.

I have an usb adapter from Pololu:

      T
his has DTR, so, do you mean I can use it as a programmer? I have to use it with DTR connected to Reset?

You will have to add this in the middle

Thanks, but will that also work with a 10uF Capacitor? I only have this one.

        Thank you.

That seems an inverter, is it?

Simplistically yes, but the R and C are equally important

It looks like it might work, once you add the circuit below.

Not sure why you'd want to risk your display on something that might not work and possibly damage it.

Is your time so 'costless' that getting the extra components and building your own cable 'neatly' is cheaper than the cost of the cable?

yes it is cheaper, because cable costs $28 in my countrythis FT232RL module i bought for $4 + free shippingi use 5pin cable + FT232RL module + mini USB cableso my cable cost only $4:5pin cable = $0 (because was included with LCD)FT232RL module = $4mini USB cable = $0 (because i used one from my external 2,5" HDD)

                    Hi,

I have this USB-Serial adapter and it appears to have the DTR... Would it work with the uLCD-43PT-AR?

You'd need to add the reset circuitry and then it would probably work.

I'm a bit worried about the datasheet claiming max 100ma on the 5v line, very few of our displays will work if that is indeed the case.
