To answer your question, it's very feasible to do without an Arduino, but it does depend what you are wanting to achieve. If you use a Diablo base display module for example, that has Analog Inputs, Digital Inputs/Outputs, counters, PWM, etc etc.

What I am hoping to do is simple:

    Oil Pressure.
separate left and right cylinder head temp (corvair engine)
    gas guage
    Tachometer.
    Speedo

I was hoping to use several of these: http://www.4dsystems.com.au/product/uLCD_220RD_AR/

And a master one of these: http://www.4dsystems.com.au/product/uLCD_70DT_AR/

Depending on how the large display might be incorporated into a satnav or stereo. If not possible, would just opt for something like this: http://www.4dsystems.com.au/product/uLCD_32PTU_AR/

not sure what is available on the satnav. Regarding the stereo, I usually just stream off my phone, so I could do some sort of bluetooth module to the arduino?

    Thanks.

Hi I have been doing research on making digital gauges for my Pre-OBD car. I see that some other systems, based on arduino, are accepting input from temp sensors and other types of system info.

Is anyone doing that with the 4d system?

    Thanks
